Report on the challenges and prospects for aquaculture (and fisheries) in relation to climate change, to coincide with World Food Day.

The document ‘Fishing and Aquaculture in a Changing Climate’ analyses the impact of climate change on fishing and aquaculture, which are essential for global food security.

Warming, acidification and deoxygenation of the oceans are disrupting marine ecosystems, causing a redistribution of species and degradation of habitats such as coral reefs. Overfishing, the use of destructive gear and intensive aquaculture are exacerbating the situation by depleting stocks and polluting the environment. These pressures threaten livelihoods and food security, and exacerbate inequalities and regional tensions.

The report proposes solutions for a sustainable future: adopting ecosystem approaches, reducing climate impacts, developing sustainable aquaculture models, and establishing participatory governance. A rapid and collective transition is essential to strengthen the resilience of marine ecosystems and human societies in the face of global change.
