3 questions to Guillaume Dekoninck from the Echo Village

Every month, our adherents answer our questions and present their activity as part of the "3 questions to." This month, Guillaume Dekoninck from the Écho Village answers us.

What’s your activity?

We run an aquaponics farm. We produce trout and eel as well as leafy vegetables and aromatic plants (cabbage, tomatoes, persil, basilic, tarragon,..). The operation is simple: the excrement from the fish provides with a nutrient-rich water, which is then used for growing vegetables and fruits (the excrements are mineralized through biofilters, they are transformed into nitrite, then in nitrates). Plants absorbed the excrements and purify the water. It is a sustainable system since it operates in a close circuit.

Who are your products/services addressed to?

Our products are addressed to the restauration, to the middle distribution and to individuals. With 15€ or 25€ per week, they can obtain supplies of vegetables and fish from the farm.

Why are innovation and research important in your activity sector?

Innovation is the heart of our work. Aquapony is a very innovative activity which allows to recycle discards and obtain a turnover from two types of production: horticulture and fish farming. In this activity, research enables us to improve the production (i.e. boosting the growth of plants with LED lights) or to combine different activities with aquapony (such as smoking of fish).
