Adaptation of Aquaculture Fish to Plant Feeds

Context

The growth of world aquaculture and the need for preservation of natural marine resources require making changes to the composition of feeds for farmed fish towards more sustainable formulas (plants, insects...).

Objective

Selecting fish suitable for being fed with plant food.

About the project

As a first step, the project partners are studying the results of different genotypes fed with conventional or plant-based foods. The tests are carried out in production conditions (trout, sea bass, sea bream) and in experimental and laboratory fish farming (trout, sea bass). In a second step, the different genotypes are evaluated on different criteria (technical, economic, physiological...). This evaluation makes it possible to assess their level of adaptation to plant foods. The project will then make it possible to define selection methods adapted to these new foods, and finally to describe the benefits and potential risks of genetic selection for adaptation to plant foods.
