Development of life cycle indicators for products and processes in the aquatic sector

Context

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a standardized evaluation method (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044). It allows for performing a multi-criteria and multi-stage environmental assessment of a system (product, service, company or process) over its entire life cycle based on specific databases. In the aquatic products sector, there is currently little data on which professionals can rely to carry out this environmental assessment. Moreover, it is necessary to increase the skills of all the players in the sector, whether at the level of higher education, technical centers or companies.

Objective

Developing life cycle indicators for products and processes in the aquatic sector.

About the project

The ICV Aqua project aims at building databases in three areas representative of the Hauts-de-France Region: sea bass and sea bream aquaculture, lobster, crab and coastal herring fishing, salting, smoking, filleting and trapping processes. ICV Aqua also aims at improving the skills of actors in the region on Life Cycle Assessment.

Thus, through LCA, the environmental performance of aquatic products can be assessed, and it is possible to show how they can contribute to sustainable food.
