Sustainable management of skates and rays

Context

Quotas are catch limits of seafood products (expressed in tons or in figures) set by the European Commission over a defined area and period. The "Various skate and ray fish" quota does not take into account the real level of abundance of each species. Fishermen declare their catches of skate and ray fish inaccurately. The quota is therefore quickly and inefficiently consumed. In addition, under the Landing Obligation, fishers must bring to dockside the fish caught even if they do not meet the size criteria allowed for sale or are not targeted by fishers. In 2019, skate and ray fish are granted an exemption from survival, time for stakeholders to conduct projects and provide additional scientific evidence to maintain it in a sustainable manner.

Objective

Proposing a sustainable and transboundary management for skate stocks in the Channel and North Sea by bringing together scientific knowledge.
