NUTRIMEMO: Development of new products to improve the memory and well-being of the over-50's via nutrient supplements
It is now widely accepted that the level of health spending in the coming years will be determined largely by the consequences of cerebral ageing. This is why it is important to have a better understanding of the risk factors which it could be possible to act on preventively. In this context, an important challenge is to define a public health nutritional policy intended to delay the dependency of the elderly in our society. The development of new foods or functional ingredients forms part of this policy.
The aim of the NUTRIMEMO project is to develop and produce a formula based on fish oil and a margarine, both rich in long chain (DHA and EPA) AGPI n-3 and/or in vitamin A, with the aim of improving the memory and the well-being of the elderly person. This project is one of the ten agri-industrial research and development priorities set out in the CAB/C2009 circular from the French Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Apart from the technological aspects regarding the production of a fish oil, its reformulation and the development of a new margarine, this project is centred on the execution of a clinical study whose objective is to support the scientific proofs required in order to put together the 'health claim' statutory application as is required by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
This project must allow industrial partners to diversify towards the new supplements and functional foods markets with a very original positioning which targets the prevention of memory disorders in the elderly.
This project, labelised by the PROD'INNOV Pole, was co-labelised by the AQUIMER Pole of Competitiveness on the 22nd April, 2010.
